Wood Working hobies that can turn into a small business opportunity.

     Hello again, I would like to share some woodworking ideas with you that can not only become a great Hobie for you, but can turn into a successful second income for you as well.

     You have the wood lathe, my personal favorite. Well, lets just say that I could not even begin to tell you all the successful hobby/business opportunities that can come out of a lathe. I have a friend that makes doll house miniatures, kroshay hooks and duck calls on his lathe and makes a huge second income just by selling them on E-bay.  I make custom made pens on my wood lathe for Hobie and business and do pretty good myself, especially around holly days. I also make custom knife handles for fixed blade knives.

     You can make just about anything you can dream up on a wood lathe and if you master what ever it is your making, you can make some real money with that, so don't ever dismiss the chance to make money on the side, even if it is just a Hobie, because even as just a Hobie, you still need to replenish your product and supplies right?

     Ok, now how about you larger scale wood workers out there? If you can refinish wood cabinets or furniture, you got it made, because you would not believe how many people out there are in need of having their cabinets and or furniture refinished but cant afford what the big name companies charge for the job, so this is where you can really make the difference. You can do the job for half the price that most big names would charge because your doing it at your own pace and not paying for a crew of people to come in there to knock it out. The materials alone would be so much cheaper being purchased at any wood/lumber dealer. Even if it takes a bit longer to get the job done, I don't think people would mind as long as they know they are saving a boat load of money because of it. Plus it will all be custom work and better quality because the extra time was put into it to make it right.

Pen making just got more interesting (MUST READ)

Hello all,

I have some great news for all you pen turners out there.

     Today I visited the Rockler website like I have been ever since we got them as a vender in the tool store I work for, when I came across this one item. I could not believe my eyes. Are you ready for this. I thought I new of just about every material known to man for making pens on a wood lathe, but boy was I wrong. The item I saw was a Corn Cobb . Can you believe that. They dry it out, then fill it with some type of rezen to harden it up for turning on your lathe. The even stranger part though, is that this material makes some of the most beautiful pens I have ever seen in my life, and I've seen alot - lol. I will be researching this further to see how to go about turning one of these beauties and as soon as I find out more, I will let you know. When I make one, I will post it on this blog for you all to see what a corn cobb pen looks like. It almost looks like snake scales. It's cool none the less.  My web site - http://www.pensbydave.com

    I can only hope and dream that I will be able to do that to a pen one of these days. This is about as complex a Pen as you can make.

    This is a fountain Pen with a gold tip, plus rhodium, turquoise body and tons on inlay work and design.

    This Pen has so many steps, I dont think I could list them all in this post. This is out of my new Custom Pen making book and I will be attempting this as soon as I feel more comfortable with my knowledge of this type of Pen. Brown wood Burl Roller Ball Pen - newest custom pen by David Terry

This is my latest custom pen. This pen looks even better when you are holding it in your hands.

Not only did I use one of the finest woods, but I used a titanium nitrate pen kit. The titanium nitrates gold look will not fade. I am very pleased with the over all results of this fine writing instrument.

Custom Pens by Dave (Jointer machine story )

    Hello. I have a short but pretty cool story I would like to share with you. I have been looking for a wood jointer machine for a wile that would suite my needs and the only one I could find was a Delta bench top, but they wanted over two hundred bucks for it, so I put it off.  Then this week, I was offerd one for free from a friend of mine that works with me. It's from the late 70s, but in great shape. It just needed a major cleaning wich I gave it with machine rust remover and top coat finish to protect and keep the moisture out. I also greased and oiled it, cleaned and sharpend the three jointer blades and now I am just trying to find out who it is made by so I can locate the manual on line and print it out. Plus I need to get a fence for it and see what other accessories might be available for it. Eather way, It runs great and I love it.  I just wanted to share that with you all, because it is amazing how things seem to work out sometimes.

    Hello everyone.

    I want to let everyone that follows this pen blog of mine know what I have been up to lately.

I have been trying to find a new home to live in because our land lord decided at the last minute in the middle of winter that he wants to move in to our unit because he has bill trouble and we had no lease with him, so we where up the creek without a paddle, if you know what I mean.     Hello all,

    I just love all the materials that are available to make my Custom Pens. The types of materials are endless for Pen making. I love to work with wood, stone, acrylic, deer antler and water buffalo horn, but there are alot of woods I havent tryed yet. Some of the finest woods to work with are the burls, because they are taken from the stump or croch area of the tree where the grains are more beautiful and the wood tends to have a nice patern of pits and knots that make each piece even more special and a one of a kind piece. There are many acrylics I have not tryed yet.

    What I am trying to say in the above info is, if you want a special Custom made Pen that you dont see on my website http://www.pensbydave.com ,  then let me know by e-mail, sales@pensbydave.com exactly what type and style of Pen you want and I will order the supplies and make it for you. I just dont have the free time to post all the Pens I make on my website every time I make a new one.
